Jell-O Day

Updated on May 15, 2015

A Wacky Holiday In July

July 12th is "Eat Your Jell-O Day".

Did you know that Jello was invented in LeRoy, New York in 1897? Pearle Wait, a carpenter in LeRoy, discovered the fruit flavoured dessert while trying to create a cough remedy and laxative tea in his home. His wife named the dessert Jell-O. After several unsuccessful owners of the product, Jell-O took off in popularity. In 1925 the Jell-O Company was sold to Postum Cereal and eventually became General Foods Corporation. Currently Jell-O is owned by Kraft-General Foods.

Don't Miss The LeRoy Jell-O Gallery and Museum

Supported by the LeRoy Historical Society

The history and success of Jell-O is fascinating. In LeRoy, New York you can visit The Jell-O Gallery, which is full of memorabilia and the history of this wonderful dessert. My visit took me back to my childhood when I saw Jell-O packaging of the 1950s and 1960s. The gallery also has a collection of horse drawn carriages and wagons that were used to distribute boxes of Jell-O to grocery stores.

The staff in the museum are friendly and very knowledgeable about Jell-O's history.

To get to LeRoy, New York, take exit 47 off of the New York Thruway and drive approximately 5 km (3 mi) south to the town. The museum's address is 23 Main Street.

LeRoy is best known as the "Birthplace of Jell-O," but few people know that in 1929 it had one of the finest private airports in the United States and was home to Amelia Earhart's airplane, the Friendship. In the 19th century, LeRoy was known for Igham University, one of the first colleges for women and the first to grant a four-year degree.

The gift shop at the gallery is full of sweatshirts, t-shirts, golf shirts, magnets, mugs, and much more. All items have either "Jello", LeRoy, NY, or both on them. The wearing apparel is top quality and prices are reasonable.

Remember the J-E-L-L-O tune that was used to advertise the dessert?
